Listen Beneath the Restlessness
Today’s devotional
An achievement can bring genuine satisfaction and still leave a question behind. The work was worthwhile, the recognition was welcome, and yet the quiet afterward reveals a longing that the accomplishment could not settle. We can notice that experience without dismissing the good we received or treating ourselves as ungrateful.
Psalm 63 gives desire a direct address. The psalmist seeks God with the whole self, using the language of thirst and a dry land. Remembered worship and present longing belong together. The prayer does not ask an achievement or possession to become sufficient for the soul. It turns toward the God whose steadfast love gives life its deepest setting.
Restlessness can help us examine what we have asked another good to provide. A career may offer contribution and still be unable to establish our worth. A relationship can carry real love without becoming the source of every reassurance. A successful project can matter without giving us mastery of the future. Receiving those limits allows the gifts to remain gifts. It also frees the people around us from the burden of satisfying a need larger than any one relationship can hold.
Pause over a pursuit that has occupied your attention recently. What are you hoping it will make possible? Beneath the visible aim, is there a desire to be known, secure, forgiven, or at rest? Bring that desire into prayer before deciding what to do with it. In Christ, God comes near to a human life with its thirst still present. You can continue meaningful work while learning to receive your life from a love that accomplishment did not create and disappointment cannot finally exhaust.

Psalm 63:1-5 · WEBU
1God, you are my God. I will earnestly seek you. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh longs for you, in a dry and weary land, where there is no water.
2So I have seen you in the sanctuary, watching your power and your glory.
3Because your loving kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise you.
4So I will bless you while I live. I will lift up my hands in your name.
5My soul shall be satisfied as with the richest food. My mouth shall praise you with joyful lips,

For reflection
What deeper desire might be speaking through a pursuit that has kept me restless?
A practice for today
Name one current goal and the need you hope it will meet. Thank God for the good the goal can offer, then pray honestly about the larger desire it cannot carry by itself.
A prayer
God of steadfast love, hear the longing beneath my busyness. Help me receive good things with gratitude and recognize the limits of what they can give. Draw my restless attention toward you, and let the security I receive in Christ make me freer to work, love, and rest with generosity. Amen.
