When Ability Learns to Serve

By Dr. R. C. TitusAbout 3 minutesReading 8 of 14

Today’s devotional

The ability to change a difficult situation can be a real gift. Knowledge helps us build, repair, protect, and relieve suffering. Yet growing capability can also awaken a quieter expectation: perhaps enough skill or the right system will finally make us secure against every vulnerability of human life.

Jesus addresses his disciples' desire for position by examining the use of power. He contrasts domination with service and points toward his own life given for others. Greatness takes shape through care. The passage does not ask us to abandon our abilities; it gives them a purpose that can be tested by the good they offer to people rather than the importance they confer on us.

A tool can make a task easier without telling us whether the task deserves our lives. Information can improve a decision without guaranteeing its outcome. Greater control over one process may leave the deeper need for meaning and trust untouched. Receiving these limits can protect knowledge from becoming a substitute for wisdom. It can also free us to value contributions that cannot be reduced to efficiency: presence beside a grieving friend, a truthful apology, or time spent receiving another person's experience.

Consider one ability, tool, or position you hold. Whose life does it help, and who bears the cost of its use? Ask whether a more attentive arrangement would serve the same purpose with greater care. Offer your skill without requiring it to prove that you can master everything. Christ's service gives power its proper direction. We can pursue knowledge diligently while remaining people who receive life, depend on others, and trust God beyond the limits of what our methods can accomplish.

Mark 10:42-45 · WEBU

42Jesus summoned them and said to them, “You know that they who are recognized as rulers over the nations lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.

43But it shall not be so among you, but whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant.

44Whoever of you wants to become first among you shall be bondservant of all.

45For the Son of Man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Pause and respond

For reflection

How could something I am able to do become more clearly an act of service?

A practice for today

Examine one tool, skill, or responsibility you use often. Identify a person affected by it and ask how its use could better respect their needs, dignity, or time. Make one manageable adjustment.

A prayer

Serving Lord, receive the abilities and influence entrusted to me. Teach me to use them for another person’s good and to recognize the limits of what they can accomplish. Keep knowledge joined to wisdom, power joined to care, and my hope rooted in your love rather than in control. Amen.
