Grace Within the Work
Today’s devotional
Sharing responsibility can reveal how tightly we have held it. We welcome another person's help until their judgment changes the plan. Then impatience rises, or the desire to take back control appears. The work has become a place where we can notice what still needs formation in us.
Paul calls the Philippians to live out their salvation while assuring them that God is at work within their willing and doing. The surrounding chapter places this response under the example of Christ's humility. Grace is already active as the community learns to live faithfully together. Their participation matters within that gift, including the ordinary speech and conduct through which they make Christ's life visible.
We can therefore bring an unfinished willingness to God. Perhaps we want to listen and still interrupt. Perhaps we recognize a colleague's gift while struggling to share authority. Awareness can become an invitation to practice another response. We can pause, ask for understanding, and allow a good contribution to affect the work. When we fail, we can name what happened and repair what is ours. Growth often includes repeated returns to the same lesson, each within a new situation.
Notice one place where a responsibility is asking something of your character. God may meet you there through Scripture, another person's insight, or the grace of an honest apology. The point is not to turn every task into a verdict on your maturity. It is to remain available to the love that forms us while we serve. Give thanks for a small change you can actually observe, and receive the help needed for the next response. You are among the people God is caring for through this shared work.

Philippians 2:12-16 · WEBU
12So then, my beloved, even as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
13For it is God who works in you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
14Do all things without complaining and arguing,
15that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without defect in the middle of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world,
16holding up the word of life, that I may have something to boast in the day of Christ that I didn’t run in vain nor labor in vain.
Pause and respond
For reflection
Where is an ordinary responsibility inviting me to receive grace and practice a different response?
A practice for today
Identify one pattern you noticed during shared work today. Ask God for help, then choose a specific alternative for the next occurrence, such as asking a question before offering your solution.
A prayer
God of patient grace, you see both my willingness and my resistance. Work within the places where I struggle to share, listen, or wait. Help me receive correction and practice a more generous response. Thank you for continuing to form me while I learn to serve the people you love. Amen.
