The Gifts Already Among Us

Today’s devotional

One person imagines a neighborhood meal. Another knows the kitchen, another understands transport, and another remembers the neighbors who may hesitate at the door. A hope becomes a place of welcome through these different contributions. The careful arrangements belong to the faithfulness of the work as fully as the first idea.

Paul describes believers as members of one body with differing functions and gifts. His appeal begins with sober judgment about ourselves. Grace gives each person something to offer within a shared life. The passage directs attention toward service, teaching, encouragement, generosity, leadership, and mercy. Each gift finds purpose as it becomes available to others, with diligence and care for the responsibility actually entrusted.

Leadership can overlook this provision when it values only the contribution that resembles its own. Imagination needs practical understanding. Enthusiasm needs someone who notices a promise that has not been kept. A question about capacity may protect the people whose labor makes hospitality possible. Receiving such gifts with gratitude can make a vision more generous and more sustainable. It also helps people understand that their participation has value beyond agreement with the person in charge.

Consider what is already present around you: a skill, a relationship, patient attention, or the willingness to perform an ordinary task well. Ask how it might serve the need before you. Be clear about whether you are exploring an idea or asking someone to accept a commitment. People deserve an invitation they can understand and answer freely. In Christ's body, responsibility is shared through grace. We can offer our own gifts with diligence while making room for the contributions through which others help the whole community become more faithful.

Romans 12:3-8 · WEBU

3For I say through the grace that was given me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think; but to think reasonably, as God has apportioned to each person a measure of faith.

4For even as we have many members in one body, and all the members don’t have the same function,

5so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another,

6having gifts differing according to the grace that was given to us: if prophecy, let’s prophesy according to the proportion of our faith;

7or service, let’s give ourselves to service; or he who teaches, to his teaching;

8or he who exhorts, to his exhorting; he who gives, let him do it with generosity; he who rules, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

For reflection

Whose gift would I notice more clearly if I stopped looking for a copy of my own?

A practice for today

Thank someone for a specific contribution that often goes unnoticed. Ask what they need to offer it well, and clarify one expectation or support that would make their participation more dependable.

A prayer

Generous Father, thank you for the gifts already present in this community. Help me offer what I have with diligence and receive what others bring with gratitude. Make our invitations clear and our support dependable. Through Christ, teach us to share responsibility without ranking one another’s worth by our roles. Amen.
