Self and Peer Assessment

Today’s devotional

A student asks whether the work is good enough before looking at it closely. Another compares a grade with a classmate’s and decides the comparison tells the whole story. Learning to examine one’s own work can offer a different starting point: what was I trying to do, and what does this attempt show?

Galatians places personal responsibility beside the call to bear one another’s burdens. Paul encourages people to examine their actions without building their confidence on comparison. Responsibility and mutual care belong together. We can learn to recognize our own work honestly while remaining willing to receive and offer help.

Students need teaching and practice to assess well. Clear criteria, a worked example, and an opportunity to explain a judgment can make reflection more concrete. Ask them to identify a strength, locate evidence for it, and choose one revision. A meaningful self-assessment gives the learner something useful to do.

Peer feedback also needs a culture of care. A classmate’s work deserves attention rather than a quick compliment or public ranking. Specific observations and respectful questions can help another person see a possibility. Students should know that feedback addresses the work and that the teacher remains responsible for protecting dignity and guiding the process.

Invite one small act of ownership today. Let students review before you evaluate and revise before the task feels closed. Christ’s grace can shape a classroom where honesty is possible because worth is not at stake. The learner can acknowledge an unfinished skill while remaining a valued participant in shared growth.

Read the Scripture

Open each passage and read slowly. Notice what these words reveal about God and the life before you.

Galatians 6:1-5 · WEBU

1Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, looking to yourself so that you also aren’t tempted.

2Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

3For if a man thinks himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

4But let each man examine his own work, and then he will have reason to boast in himself, and not in someone else.

5For each man will bear his own burden.

Pause and respond

For reflection

How can students learn to judge their work carefully while offering and receiving help with kindness?

A practice for today

Model a short self-assessment using clear criteria. Invite students to name one evidenced strength and one revision, then practice giving a partner a specific, respectful observation.

A prayer

Jesus, teach us responsibility joined to generosity. Help my students look honestly at their work without measuring their worth against one another. Give me wisdom to model useful feedback and protect dignity, so that reflection and revision become shared practices of patient growth. Amen.
