Guiding Light in the Digital Age
Today’s devotional
A new digital tool can make a familiar task faster, more engaging, or easier to access. It can also introduce distractions and demands we did not anticipate. Before asking what the tool can do, an educator can ask what the learner needs and whether this use of technology will serve that purpose.
Proverbs presents wisdom as something worth seeking with attention and commitment. Understanding involves listening, asking, and discerning what is right. James encourages us to bring our need for wisdom to God. These invitations remain relevant when a device offers immediate possibilities but cannot decide which possibilities deserve our attention.
Begin with a clear learning goal. A tool may help a student visualize a process, hear a text, receive timely feedback, or create an explanation. Its value depends on the experience it makes possible and the barriers it introduces. Consider access, usability, privacy, and the amount of attention it asks learners to manage.
Christ’s care for people can guide these practical judgments. A student who struggles to use a platform should not disappear behind the assumption that technology is automatically intuitive. Model the needed steps, offer appropriate support, and keep a workable alternative available when the tool fails or does not meet the need.
Choose one use of technology to examine today. What does it add to understanding, and what might it take away? Listen to students’ experience and remain willing to revise. Wise teaching can welcome a useful tool while retaining responsibility for the human purposes it is meant to serve. The learner remains the center of that responsibility.

Read the Scripture
Open each passage and read slowly. Notice what these words reveal about God and the life before you.
Proverbs 2:1-6 · WEBU
1My son, if you will receive my words, and store up my commandments within you,
2so as to turn your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding;
3yes, if you call out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding;
4if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures;
5then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
6For the LORD gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.
James 1:5 · WEBU
5But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
Pause and respond
For reflection
What learning purpose does this tool serve, and what burden or barrier might it introduce?
A practice for today
Review one digital activity against a clear learning goal. Ask students what helps or hinders their participation, then simplify one step or provide an appropriate alternative where access is difficult.
A prayer
God of wisdom, guide my choices in a changing digital world. Help me recognize tools that serve understanding and notice the burdens they may bring. Keep people at the center of my decisions, and give me humility to revise when a promising approach does not help. Amen.
