Writing Across the Curriculum

Today’s devotional

Writing can reveal what a learner has not yet fully understood. An idea that seemed clear in thought becomes harder to explain on the page. This difficulty can be useful. It gives students a chance to organize, question, and revise their understanding while something can still change.

Paul urges Timothy to handle the word of truth responsibly and avoid quarrels that damage hearers. His instruction concerns faithful ministry and the gospel. It offers an ethical reminder for all communication: words carry responsibility, and the way we use them can either serve understanding or obscure what matters.

Across subjects, writing can become a tool for learning. A student might explain a method, connect an observation to a claim, or summarize the significance of a source. The purpose should guide the task. A short, thoughtful response may reveal more than a long assignment whose demands distract from the central question.

Students need appropriate support for expression. A model, a planning conversation, sentence starters, or an accessible writing tool can help them begin. Distinguish the idea you are assessing from other skills that may affect its presentation. Feedback should make a next revision possible rather than overwhelm the learner with every weakness at once.

Offer a brief opportunity to write today before asking for a polished answer. Let students discover what they think and where they need more evidence. Invite them to revise one important sentence with care. Truthful communication grows through such patient work, and Christ’s regard for the listener can shape why we seek to make our meaning clear.

Read the Scripture

Open each passage and read slowly. Notice what these words reveal about God and the life before you.

14Remind them of these things, charging them in the sight of the Lord that they don’t argue about words to no profit, to the subverting of those who hear.

15Give diligence to present yourself approved by God, a workman who doesn’t need to be ashamed, properly handling the Word of Truth.

16But shun empty chatter, for it will go further in ungodliness,

For reflection

How can a writing task help students develop an idea rather than merely display a finished answer?

A practice for today

Add a brief explanation or reflection to one lesson. Provide an appropriate model or support, then ask students to revise one sentence so its meaning or evidence becomes clearer.

A prayer

God of truth, guide the words we place before others. Help me use writing as an invitation to think, question, and revise. Give learners fitting support and patience with unfinished expression, so that their growing understanding can be offered clearly and responsibly. Amen.
