The People Within Our Becoming
Today’s devotional
A familiar phrase may carry a teacher's influence. The patience we offer may have been received from someone who once waited for us. We are distinct people with choices to make, yet the way we meet those choices has been shaped through lives that touched our own, often without our noticing at the time.
Paul remembers Timothy with affection and names the sincere faith associated with his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice. He encourages Timothy to stir up the gift he has received and to live from God's Spirit of power, love, and sound judgment. Remembered relationship becomes encouragement for present responsibility. The gift is personal, but its story is shared.
Some influences bring gratitude, while others require careful examination. A pattern learned early may need to be changed; a hurt may need protection and help. We do not have to idealize every relationship in order to acknowledge that we have been formed through others. Grace allows us to receive what was good, speak truth about what harmed, and seek new ways of participating. Repair may be possible in some relationships, while wise boundaries remain necessary in others.
Notice one influence you would like to carry forward deliberately. Perhaps it is a person's readiness to ask a good question or their habit of including someone overlooked. Give that inheritance a practical expression today, and offer thanks if an appropriate opportunity exists. You are also entering the experience of people around you. Christ can shape what you offer through the gifts you have received and the patterns you are learning to change. Becoming is a shared journey, and love can continue through ordinary responses long after their first source is out of view.

2 Timothy 1:3-7 · WEBU
3I thank God, whom I serve as my forefathers did, with a pure conscience. How unceasing is my memory of you in my petitions, night and day
4longing to see you, remembering your tears, that I may be filled with joy;
5having been reminded of the sincere faith that is in you, which lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, in you also.
6For this cause, I remind you that you should stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
7For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

For reflection
What have I received through another person that I want to offer more deliberately?
A practice for today
Name one helpful influence and one concrete way to practice it today. If appropriate, thank the person who offered it, while allowing complicated parts of the relationship to remain honestly acknowledged.
A prayer
God of generations and friendship, thank you for the care that has helped form me. Help me receive what is good, address harmful patterns truthfully, and offer a wiser presence to others. Stir the gifts entrusted to me, so my life may carry forward something of Christ’s patient and generous love. Amen.
