Bring the Whole Person Home

Today’s devotional

The search has moved through questions of knowledge, memory, relationship, practice, attention, and love. Each matters, yet none can bear the whole life by itself. We need wisdom for what we know, grace within belonging, and a purpose for becoming. Worship gathers these movements around the One who is worthy of our deepest trust.

Jesus speaks with the Samaritan woman about worship of the Father in spirit and truth. Their conversation addresses a real disagreement about place and opens toward God's initiative in seeking worshipers. Jesus makes himself known within that encounter. The invitation is personal and truthful, reaching the whole self rather than resting in a location, technique, or carefully managed appearance.

Worship can therefore become a way of receiving and ordering ordinary life. We bring our learning before God, including what remains uncertain. We bring relationships, with their gifts and need for repair. We bring practices that shape us and desires that need a wiser center. Work and technology can remain useful within that offering, while our worth is received through God's love rather than manufactured through performance. Christ welcomes dependent people and calls them into faithful participation.

As you finish this collection, choose one change you want to carry into the coming week. Let it be concrete enough to practice and gentle enough to revise with wisdom. You might protect a time of prayer, seek a fuller conversation, or use assistance in a way that leaves room for understanding. Offer that response to the Father through Christ. The future will bring further questions and new tools. A whole life can continue to know, belong, and become while its deepest affection rests in the God who has already come near.

John 4:21-26 · WEBU

21Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

22You worship that which you don’t know. We worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews.

23But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such to be his worshipers.

24God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

25The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming, he who is called Christ. When he has come, he will declare to us all things.”

26Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one who speaks to you.”

Pause and respond

For reflection

How can one ordinary part of my knowing, belonging, or becoming become a more faithful offering to God?

A practice for today

Choose one practice from this collection to carry into the coming week. Name its purpose, fit it to your actual capacity, and decide when you will reflect on whether it is serving love.

A prayer

Father, receive my whole life through Jesus Christ: what I know, the people I love, the habits forming me, and the desires I still struggle to understand. Teach me worship in spirit and truth. Keep my tools and work within their proper purpose, and let your love remain the home of my heart. Amen.
