A Life Worth Tending Before It Achieves

Today’s devotional

Before we could contribute, we had already received life. Someone had to feed us, attend to our bodies, and answer needs we could not explain. Achievement would become part of the story, but it did not establish our first claim on care. That beginning remains important when receiving becomes more visible again.

Genesis 1 describes human beings as created in God's image, blessed, and entrusted with responsibility. The image is not distributed according to intelligence, independence, income, or usefulness. The person whose abilities have changed remains a person whose life matters before God. Care rests on that dignity rather than on the return we expect from providing it.

John's declaration that the Word became flesh gives embodied life a decisive place in Christian hope. Hunger, fatigue, pain, and dependence are not beneath spiritual concern. A sincere welcome becomes more complete when it includes the practical conditions through which someone can participate: accessible space, understandable information, transportation, or enough time to respond.

Receiving life as a gift does not require feeling grateful for every circumstance. We can love a person and grieve an illness. We can be thankful to be alive while wishing an injury had never happened. Honest gratitude has room for lament and does not make a positive emotion the price of receiving support.

Consider one ordinary need in your life or someone else's. What would it mean to attend to that need because the person is already worthy of care? Perhaps an appointment needs arranging, a burden needs sharing, or a conversation needs more time. Stewardship begins with this patient recognition: the life before us deserves to be tended, even when its possibilities and difficulties remain unfinished.

Genesis 1:26-28 · WEBU

26God said, “Let’s make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

27God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them.

28God blessed them. God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

John 1:14-18 · WEBU

14The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the only born Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.

15John testified about him. He cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me, for he was before me.’ ”

16From his fullness we all received grace upon grace.

17For the law was given through Moses. Grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.

18No one has seen God at any time. The only born Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, has declared him.

Pause and respond

For reflection

Where would my care change if I began with the person’s given dignity rather than their current usefulness?

A practice for today

Attend to one ordinary need without turning it into a judgment of worth. Arrange practical help, allow more time, or ask what would make participation possible for you or someone else.

A prayer

Creator and giver of life, help me recognize dignity before achievement. Teach me to honor embodied needs and make room for gratitude that can tell the truth about pain. Guide one practical act of care today. Let the life you have given be received and tended with the patience of Christ. Amen.
