When the Future Changes Shape

Today’s devotional

A loss can include days that never arrived. A journey will not happen as imagined, a role must change, or someone is absent from every picture of the years ahead. Other people may notice the practical adjustment while missing the private future that has also been lost.

John 11 brings us to Martha and Mary grieving Lazarus. They speak of what might have happened if Jesus had been there. The narrative includes a confession of resurrection hope and the tears of Jesus. Faith does not remove the reality of the tomb or make sorrow an interruption to be corrected.

Our losses do not come with the same immediate outcome as this particular sign. We can pray for healing and hope in resurrection without promising that every condition will be reversed now. A practical adaptation may be helpful while still leaving grief unanswered. A new opportunity can be good without replacing the person, ability, or future we miss.

Psalm 13 gives words to the question of how long. Lament turns toward God with the pain, including the experience that God feels distant. We do not have to finish every prayer with an emotional resolution. Honest companionship may be more faithful than an explanation offered to make everyone else comfortable.

Name what has changed and what that change means to you. If another person is grieving, allow them to describe it rather than assigning a lesson. A life can continue to receive meaningful moments without betraying what has been loved. New arrangements, honest prayer, and patient care may help the present become livable while grief keeps its rightful place. God can be addressed from within that whole, unfinished experience.

John 11:32-36 · WEBU

32Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”

33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled,

34and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.”

35Jesus wept.

36The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!”

Psalm 13:1-6 · WEBU

1How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?

2How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart every day? How long shall my enemy triumph over me?

3Behold, and answer me, LORD, my God. Give light to my eyes, lest I sleep in death;

4lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed against him;” lest my adversaries rejoice when I fall.

5But I trust in your loving kindness. My heart rejoices in your salvation.

6I will sing to the LORD, because he has been good to me.

Pause and respond

For reflection

What future or former capacity am I grieving, and who could help me name that loss without rushing to explain it?

A practice for today

Give one loss an accurate sentence, including what it meant to you. Bring it to prayer or share it with someone safe. If supporting another person, listen before offering an adaptation, explanation, or solution.

A prayer

Jesus, who wept among grieving friends, receive the future I miss and the changes I did not choose. Make room for lament beside hope. Give me patient companions and practical care for the present. Help me receive good moments without making them an explanation for the loss or a demand to move on. Amen.
