A Step Taken with Help

Today’s devotional

Care involves both receiving help and participating where we can. Another person may open a door, offer protection, or remain beside us during a difficult decision. Some choices still belong to us. Recognizing that relationship can preserve dignity without placing the whole weight of healing on an isolated individual.

Galatians calls believers to carry one another's burdens while also speaking of each person's own responsibility. The passage holds shared care and personal participation together. Ecclesiastes pictures the value of companionship when one person falls. Scripture gives us a life in which help is ordinary, responsibility is real, and neither needs to cancel the other.

What a person can choose depends partly on circumstances and capacity. Rest, treatment, protection, and practical assistance may be essential before another step becomes possible. Continuing symptoms or difficult feelings do not prove a failure of willingness. Love can make room for consent, ask what support is welcome, and help remove an obstacle. At times, care also needs to address actual danger rather than urging someone to become more comfortable within it.

Consider one choice genuinely available to you today. It may be small: accepting a meal, making an appointment, declining a demand, or asking someone to sit with you. Then name what you cannot reasonably carry alone. Bring both to Christ, who received companions and whose body is called to shared care. If you are helping, allow the other person's voice to remain present in the decisions that affect them. A faithful step can be taken with assistance. Dependence need not diminish the person who is learning how to participate in their own care.

Galatians 6:2-5 · WEBU

2Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

3For if a man thinks himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

4But let each man examine his own work, and then he will have reason to boast in himself, and not in someone else.

5For each man will bear his own burden.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 · WEBU

9Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.

10For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

Pause and respond

For reflection

What is one choice I can make, and what support would make that choice possible?

A practice for today

Identify a manageable next step and one person or resource that could support it. Ask for specific help, while leaving room to adjust the step if your capacity or circumstances change.

A prayer

God of our shared life, help me recognize both my agency and my need. Give me courage to ask for support and freedom to receive it without shame. Teach those who accompany me to honor my voice, and guide us toward choices that protect dignity, strengthen care, and make room for hope. Amen.
