Giving Without Owning

Today’s devotional

Giving can become tangled with the wish to know how the gift will be used. Advice is offered, time is invested, and we hope the person receiving care will choose the future we imagined. That hope is understandable. Love still needs to distinguish another person's good from an outcome that reassures the giver.

Parenthood brings this distinction into focus. A child is entrusted to care without becoming an extension of a parent's will. Teaching, protection, correction, and guidance remain serious responsibilities. They are most truthful when they serve the child's good rather than make the child's choices responsible for proving the parent's worth or preserving control.

Psalm 127 places household labor within dependence upon God. Its account of children as gift challenges anxious self-sufficiency. Receiving such a gift does not make one life more complete than another. People without children, including those who carry grief about that absence, do not need a substitute achievement before their lives can be honored.

The chapter's wider invitation includes giving toward a future we cannot entirely control. Teachers, friends, mentors, neighbors, and others can offer something that helps life flourish beyond themselves. The value of such care cannot be settled by a visible legacy. Some gifts remain quiet, and some people require far more care than they can visibly return.

Mark 10:45 places service within Jesus' saving self-giving. His redemption is unique; our costly care does not take its place. A parent or mentor is not a savior required to secure another person's future through sufficient sacrifice. Christ's grace sustains responsible love while freeing the giver to receive help and acknowledge the limits of human control.

Today, offer one form of care with a little more freedom for the person receiving it. Listen before deciding what is needed. Give guidance appropriate to your responsibility, and release the demand that the response confirm your importance. Love may still involve concern and difficult decisions. It can remain faithful without claiming another person's life as something it owns.

Psalm 127 · WEBU

A Song of Ascents. By Solomon.

1Unless the LORD builds the house, they who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

2It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil, for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

3Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

4As arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are the children of youth.

5Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them. They won’t be disappointed when they speak with their enemies in the gate.

Pause and respond

For reflection

Where has my care for another person become entangled with the need to control an outcome?

A practice for today

Before offering advice today, ask what kind of help would be useful. Listen to the answer, then offer what is appropriate without demanding appreciation or a particular response.

A prayer

God of generous grace, thank you for the lives and responsibilities entrusted to us. Through Jesus Christ, teach us to give without claiming ownership. Help us guide wisely, accept support, and entrust to you the futures our love cannot completely secure. Amen.
