Commitment: Choosing a Faithful Direction

Today’s devotional

A meaningful insight may stay with us for an evening and disappear beneath the next day's demands. We recognize a needed change, feel its importance, and then return to the arrangements that made the old pattern easy. Commitment helps an intention acquire a place in ordinary life.

At Shechem, Joshua calls Israel to remember God's faithfulness and consider whom they will serve. This is a covenant decision made by a people with a shared history. Their response concerns worship and allegiance, not simply a better routine. They are being asked to order life around the God who has brought them this far.

For followers of Jesus, commitments also belong within a relationship already offered by grace. We do not earn belonging by performing consistently. We respond to Christ by letting his way shape our time, speech, attention, and care. The daily choices may look modest, but they express what we are learning to love.

A faithful commitment should be specific enough to practice and humble enough to reconsider. Promising unlimited availability may sound generous while making honesty impossible. Choosing to listen without checking a phone, to seek needed counsel, or to make time for prayer can be both clear and sustainable. Wisdom welcomes limits, changing circumstances, and the perspectives of those affected.

Choose a direction you can begin to inhabit today. Decide when the practice will happen and what help may support it. If you miss a day, return without turning the lapse into a verdict on your life. Commitment becomes trustworthy through repeated, honest response. God's faithfulness gives us courage to begin and grace to begin again.

Joshua 24:14-18 · WEBU

14“Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth. Put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, in Egypt; and serve the LORD.

15If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

16The people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;

17for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way in which we went, and among all the peoples through the middle of whom we passed.

18The LORD drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD; for he is our God.”

Pause and respond

For reflection

What small, specific commitment would help my life express the allegiance I profess?

A practice for today

Choose one practice for the next five days and attach it to an existing moment, such as breakfast or the journey home. Keep it modest, tell someone if helpful, and allow yourself to return after a missed day.

A prayer

Faithful God, thank you for the grace that precedes my decisions. Help me choose a direction that serves love and make space to practice it. Keep my promises honest about my limits. When I lose my way, teach me to return with humility and renewed willingness to follow Jesus. Amen.
