Unity: The Work of Shared Life
Today’s devotional
A group can appear peaceful because important things remain unspoken. People avoid disagreement, keep disappointments private, and call the absence of conflict unity. Yet a community becomes more trustworthy when it can make room for truth without abandoning the people who bring it.
Colossians 3 places compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience within the identity of people loved by God. The call to bear with one another and forgive belongs to a shared life clothed in love. Unity grows through the way people receive and respond to one another, including when a relationship becomes strained.
This work includes ordinary attention. We listen carefully enough to understand what someone is actually saying. We make room for a perspective that differs from the majority. We acknowledge a wrong without immediately shifting blame. These actions can help a community remain connected while taking real differences seriously.
Forgiveness is also part of the passage, but it should never become pressure to conceal abuse or restore trust before there is evidence of safety. Truthful unity includes accountability and protection. A person may need distance while a situation is addressed. The health of a community is shown partly by whether it can honor those needs without treating the harmed person as the source of division.
Consider your part in one shared relationship or group. Where could a more careful question, an acknowledgment, or a practical act of inclusion make room for connection? Begin with what is yours to offer rather than trying to manage everyone's response. The peace of Christ can guide a community through difficult truth as well as through moments of easy agreement.

Colossians 3:12-17 · WEBU
12Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance;
13bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.
14Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.
15And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body, and be thankful.
16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.
17Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

For reflection
What truthful and caring contribution could I make to a relationship or group that feels strained?
A practice for today
In one shared setting, invite a perspective that may not have been heard. Listen without immediately correcting it, and identify one response within your responsibility that would support truthful connection.
A prayer
God who gathers us in love, teach us the patient work of shared life. Help us listen across differences, acknowledge harm, and protect those who need safety. Give me humility about my own contribution and courage for honest repair. Let the peace of Christ guide our relationships toward trustworthy care. Amen.
