Truth: A Willingness to Be Corrected

Today’s devotional

You may feel certain about what someone meant until a new detail changes the whole conversation. The silence you interpreted as rejection was exhaustion. The resistance you called indifference was confusion. Our first explanations can be persuasive while still leaving out something important.

Psalm 19 celebrates God's instruction as life-giving, trustworthy, and illuminating. The psalm moves from the witness of creation to the gift of God's teaching and then to a prayer about hidden faults. Receiving truth includes the recognition that our own understanding may need correction. Wisdom makes room for that discovery.

Scripture invites careful attention rather than a search for phrases that confirm whatever we already believe. We read passages within their setting, notice whom they address, and consider how they bear witness to God. We also listen to the wider Christian community and remain willing to ask questions. Confidence in God's truth need not become confidence that every interpretation we make is complete.

Jesus joined truth to grace in the people and situations before him. His way challenges both dishonest reassurance and the use of correctness as a weapon. Truthful words should help us recognize reality and respond responsibly. They may uncover wrongdoing, invite repentance, defend someone overlooked, or expose an assumption we have used to protect ourselves.

Bring one settled explanation before God today. Ask what you know, what you have inferred, and whose perspective has been missing. Seek clarification where possible. The willingness to be corrected is a form of love because other people deserve to be encountered as they are. Let truth become an invitation to clearer attention and more faithful action.

Psalm 19:7-14 · WEBU

7The LORD’s law is perfect, restoring the soul. The LORD’s covenant is sure, making wise the simple.

8The LORD’s precepts are right, rejoicing the heart. The LORD’s commandment is pure, enlightening the eyes.

9The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever. The LORD’s ordinances are true, and righteous altogether.

10They are more to be desired than gold, yes, than much fine gold, sweeter also than honey and the extract of the honeycomb.

11Moreover your servant is warned by them. In keeping them there is great reward.

12Who can discern his errors? Forgive me from hidden errors.

13Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins. Let them not have dominion over me. Then I will be upright. I will be blameless and innocent of great transgression.

14Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, LORD, my rock, and my redeemer.

Pause and respond

For reflection

Which confident assumption might change if I listened more carefully to Scripture or another person’s experience?

A practice for today

Choose one assumption behind a current concern. Separate what you observed from the explanation you added. Ask one respectful clarifying question before acting as though your explanation is the whole truth.

A prayer

God of truth, illuminate what I have overlooked and soften my defensiveness when I need correction. Help me receive your instruction with humility and listen to people whose experience differs from mine. Let my words become more accurate, my judgments more patient, and my actions more faithful to the love revealed in Jesus. Amen.
