Plan 02 · Day 2 of 5

Wisely Using Our Time

Today’s devotional

The list of worthwhile things will always be longer than the hours available. A teacher can finish planning, answer messages, check on a family, and still notice something else that deserves attention. The difficulty is often deciding which good responsibility belongs to this moment and which must wait or be shared.

Ecclesiastes names seasons of human life that cannot all be held at once. There are times to build and times to release, times to speak and times to keep silence. The passage invites humility about our place within time. Wisdom includes recognizing the season we actually inhabit rather than demanding that every season happen today.

The prayer in Psalm 90 asks God to teach us to number our days. Awareness of limits can deepen attention. We begin to ask which responsibilities serve the people entrusted to us, which commitments have become habits, and where our schedule has stopped making room for ordinary care. Those questions deserve prayer and practical judgment.

Jesus lived with purpose while also withdrawing to pray and making room for people. We cannot turn his life into a productivity method. We can receive his invitation to follow faithfully within a human life that has limits. Sleep, shared meals, worship, and companionship belong within that life.

Look at the next day with kindness and honesty. Name a few responsibilities that matter most, and leave room for what cannot be predicted. If the demands remain impossible, seek a conversation about them. Stewarding time may require changing the load as well as changing the calendar.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 · WEBU

1For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven:

2a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

3a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

4a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

5a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

6a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

7a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

8a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.

Pause and respond

For reflection

What does this season require, and what expectation is asking me to live beyond its limits?

A practice for today

Choose your three most necessary responsibilities for tomorrow. Protect a modest period for rest or relationship, and identify one task that can be delayed, simplified, or shared.

A prayer

Eternal God, thank you for the day before me and for the limits that make me human. Give me wisdom to recognize what belongs to this season. Help me work attentively, seek support when demands are too great, and receive time for rest with gratitude. Amen.
