Iron Sharpens Iron

Today’s devotional

A colleague describes a classroom difficulty that sounds familiar. You have faced something similar, yet their way of seeing it reveals a question you had missed. Such conversations can interrupt the lonely assumption that competent educators should already know what to do. Experience becomes more useful when it is shared with humility.

Proverbs values friendship, wise counsel, and the sharpening that happens between people. The image of iron working against iron suggests an encounter that changes something. Helpful companionship can include encouragement and challenge. Its purpose is strengthened judgment within a trustworthy relationship, not an opportunity to prove who knows more.

Professional conversations are most fruitful when they remain close to actual learning. Bring a student’s anonymous work sample, a specific question, or an observation you cannot yet explain. Listen for what another educator notices. Their perspective may confirm part of your thinking while exposing an assumption that needs reconsideration.

Christ gives gifts to a community in which people need one another. You have something to offer, and you also have something to receive. A newer teacher’s question can uncover a routine that experienced colleagues stopped noticing. A veteran’s patient account can keep a new teacher from mistaking one difficult week for the end of a calling.

Make room for a purposeful exchange this week. Protect student privacy and choose a setting where honest questions are welcome. You do not need a polished success story to participate. Bringing a real uncertainty with a willingness to learn can become an act of service to everyone in the conversation.

Proverbs 27:9-10 · WEBU

9Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart; so does earnest counsel from a man’s friend.

10Don’t forsake your friend and your father’s friend. Don’t go to your brother’s house in the day of your disaster. A neighbor who is near is better than a distant brother.

Pause and respond

For reflection

Where do I need another educator’s perspective, and what experience could I offer in return?

A practice for today

Invite a trusted colleague to discuss one specific teaching question. Bring an anonymized example, listen before defending your approach, and agree on one idea to try or investigate together.

A prayer

God of wisdom, thank you for people who help me see more clearly. Give me humility to ask for help and generosity to share what I have learned. Shape our conversations through truth and kindness, so our common work better serves the learners entrusted to us. Amen.
