Learning Experiences

Today’s devotional

Much of what shapes a learner happens between formal assessments. A question during a project, a shared problem, a revised decision, or a conversation after difficulty can reveal something important. If no one pauses to notice, the experience may pass without becoming part of the learner’s understanding of their growth.

Deuteronomy places the love of God within the rhythms of ordinary life: home, travel, rest, and the beginning of a day. Teaching belongs within continuing shared attention. The passage concerns Israel’s covenant life, and its vision reminds us that formation extends through repeated practices and conversations beyond a single instructional moment.

Documenting a learning experience can help a student return to it thoughtfully. A short account might name the situation, the action taken, what happened, and what the learner now understands. A photograph or artifact may help when its use respects privacy and the purpose of the record. More material is not necessarily more meaningful.

Invite students to choose experiences that matter to them as well as those required for a course. Their selections can reveal questions and responsibilities that adults have overlooked. The record should remain an aid to reflection rather than a demand to document every part of life or turn every experience into evidence.

Pause over one ordinary episode today. Ask what it may be teaching and whether a brief record would help someone return to it. Christ’s presence reaches these small encounters. Remembering them with care can make learning more connected, allowing a student to recognize how knowledge, relationships, and responsible action belong within one unfolding life.

Read the Scripture

Open each passage and read slowly. Notice what these words reveal about God and the life before you.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 · WEBU

4Hear, Israel: The LORD is our God. The LORD is one.

5You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.

6These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart;

7and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

8You shall bind them for a sign on your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes.

9You shall write them on the door posts of your house and on your gates.

Pause and respond

For reflection

Which ordinary learning experience deserves a brief pause and a meaningful record?

A practice for today

Invite students to record one recent learning episode in a few sentences or another accessible form. Ask what happened, what they learned, and why they chose to remember it.

A prayer

God of our ordinary days, help us notice the learning hidden within shared work and conversation. Give me wisdom about what to remember and what to leave private. Let a simple record serve reflection, helping students connect knowledge, relationships, and responsibility within their unfolding lives. Amen.
