Becoming in the Life God Gives

Today’s devotional

Your life does not have to follow a familiar sequence of milestones to count as a whole human life. Marriage, parenting, a particular career, and old age are not experiences everyone shares. Neither visible success nor a recognizable pattern of progress establishes personhood. We begin with lives God has given, already worthy of care.

Receive, Become, Give, Surrender, Receive Again, and Participate name movements within that life. They overlap rather than form a ladder of achievements. A child can offer love, an adult can need help, and someone who suffers can serve. Their meaning is found in Christ, who reveals faithful humanity and restores what we cannot repair ourselves.

Receiving reminds us that life, care, and saving grace are gifts, though they are not identical gifts. Becoming asks what kind of love is shaping our response. Greater skill does not automatically make us wiser or kinder. By grace, growth can move toward truth and holy love without becoming the condition on which our dignity depends.

Giving offers what we can for another person's good without claiming ownership of their future. Surrender entrusts to God what we cannot secure. It does not excuse neglect or require us to approve evil. We can act responsibly, name a wrong, and acknowledge our limits within the same life of trust. Our need to receive remains.

Receiving again reaches, in resurrection, toward a gift beyond what ordinary care can provide. Philippians 3 places the transformation of our mortal bodies in Christ's hands. Participation names our place within God's purposes, now and in renewed creation. We offer faithful love today while awaiting a fulfillment that no human achievement can make inevitable.

First John 3 holds present belonging and future transformation together. God's children look toward likeness to Christ without possessing a complete picture of that future. You do not need to make these movements into another assessment of yourself. Receive the life before you, respond where love is possible, and entrust its unfinished becoming to the crucified and risen Lord.

Adapted from chapter 33, “Becoming Fully Human,” in Becoming Fully Human by Dr. R. C. Titus.

1 John 3:1-3 · WEBU

1See how great a love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God! For this cause the world doesn’t know us, because it didn’t know him.

2Beloved, now we are children of God. It is not yet revealed what we will be; but we know that when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him just as he is.

3Everyone who has this hope set on him purifies himself, even as he is pure.

Philippians 3:20-21 · WEBU

20For our citizenship is in heaven, from where we also wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

21who will change the body of our humiliation to be conformed to the body of his glory, according to the working by which he is able even to subject all things to himself.

Pause and respond

For reflection

Which movement in my life am I tempted to judge as failure because it does not match the path I expected?

A practice for today

Name one gift you are receiving and one response of love possible today. Take that small step, then entrust one outcome you cannot control to God.

A prayer

God of the whole human story, help me receive the life you give without ranking it against another's path. Shape my response through Christ's grace. Teach me to give freely, receive honestly, and entrust what remains unfinished to your faithful care. Amen.
