Today’s devotional

You reach for a device during a pause and find yourself somewhere you did not intend to stay. A useful message becomes a chain of reactions, comparisons, or unfinished conversations. Digital spaces can offer learning and companionship, yet the way we enter and leave them also deserves attention. A recurring habit can quietly become part of our daily formation.

Ephesians calls believers to walk carefully and consider how to use their time wisely. This wisdom involves understanding what faithfulness requires within the circumstances before us. It does not demand identical habits from everyone. A caregiver awaiting news, a distant friend, and a person completing essential work may use the same device for very different forms of care.

The same letter asks that our speech serve another person’s good according to the need of the moment. That instruction travels well into messages and public posts. Before responding, we can consider whether the words are accurate, necessary, and offered with care. A person remains our neighbor even when we encounter only a small fragment of their life on a screen.

Choose one digital rhythm to examine without shaming yourself. What are you seeking when you open the app, and what does the time there actually give you? You might finish a conversation before checking a notification, verify a claim before sharing it, or set aside a short interval for undivided attention. Keep the changes realistic for your work and relationships. Ask Christ to shape the manner of your participation. The goal is a more deliberate way of receiving information and meeting people, with room to return to the life immediately before you.

Adapted from Chapter 14: The Liturgy of Digital Space in The Formative Gift of Gathering by Dr. R. C. Titus.

Read the Scripture

Open each passage and read slowly. Notice what these words reveal about God and the life before you.

Ephesians 5:15-17 · WEBU

15Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise,

16redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

17Therefore, don’t be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

Ephesians 4:29-32 · WEBU

29Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear.

30Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

31Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice.

32And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

Pause and respond

For reflection

Which digital habit needs a clearer purpose or a more considerate way of participating?

A practice for today

Before one online visit today, name why you are opening it and when you intend to leave. Before sharing a claim or response, consider its accuracy and its effect on another person.

A prayer

Lord of our attention, meet me in the habits I hardly notice. Help me use technology with purpose, speak with care, and recognize the people behind the words I read. Give me wisdom to leave room for rest, presence, and the responsibilities of the life you have given. Amen.
