Attention Before Interpretation

Today’s devotional

A person grows quiet during a conversation, and an explanation arrives quickly in your mind. Perhaps they disagree. Perhaps they are uninterested. Yet the silence may hold tiredness, grief, uncertainty, or something you cannot see. Attention asks us to leave room between what we notice and what we decide it means.

The closing prayer of Psalm 139 invites God to search the heart and lead the person praying. This request rests within a psalm about being thoroughly known by God. We can examine our reactions without pretending that our first interpretation is complete. God’s knowledge makes room for honesty, including the possibility that we have misunderstood ourselves or someone else.

At the home of Martha and Mary, Jesus attends to a woman burdened by many demands. His response does not make practical service worthless. He invites her to notice the anxiety and distraction gathering around that service. A good responsibility can become so crowded with urgency that we struggle to receive the person before us. Sacred attention helps us recognize that shift.

Today, begin with a modest act of noticing. Pay attention to the pace of your words, the concern you keep rehearsing, or the person who has had little chance to speak. You do not need to explain every feeling or monitor yourself constantly. Ask God for enough clarity to respond truthfully to this moment. A patient question may reveal more than an immediate conclusion. The Holy Spirit can help us loosen our grip on an assumption and make space for a person to tell their own story.

Luke 10:38-42 · WEBU

38As they went on their way, he entered into a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

39She had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard his word.

40But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she came up to him, and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister left me to serve alone? Ask her therefore to help me.”

41Jesus answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,

42but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Pause and respond

For reflection

Where have I treated an interpretation as a fact before listening carefully enough?

A practice for today

In one conversation today, separate what you can observe from what you assume. Ask a gentle, open question if appropriate, and allow the other person room to answer or remain private.

A prayer

Searching God, you know what I notice and what I miss. Help me recognize the assumptions I carry into relationships. Give me patience to listen, humility to be corrected, and freedom from the need to explain everything. Let my attention become an expression of Christ’s care. Amen.
