Different: Honor Gifts and Needs

Today’s devotional

One person answers quickly while another needs time to consider a question. Someone works best in quiet; another makes sense of an idea by talking it through. These differences can prompt curiosity or comparison. We may begin ranking people before we have considered what they bring or what would help them participate.

Romans 12 places varied gifts within the grace of God. Paul calls believers to think humbly about themselves and describes one body with many functions. Gifts are entrusted to people for a shared good. Their variety gives the community reasons to depend on one another and receive what no single person can provide.

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul imagines parts of the body questioning their belonging or dismissing another part's importance. Both reactions misunderstand the body. A member's difference does not remove its place, and prominence does not create independence. Paul gives special attention to members who appear weaker and to the honor the body owes them.

Jesus gathered disciples whose histories and temperaments differed. They learned to belong through following him, receiving correction, and serving together. His self-giving love, carried through the cross and resurrection, gives Christian community its center. The Holy Spirit continues to form people into shared life where gifts serve love and dependence can be acknowledged honestly.

Consider someone whose way of learning, moving, communicating, or contributing differs from yours. Their worth is already present before a particular strength becomes visible. Ask respectfully what would help them participate. Clearer directions, physical access, extra time, or a different way to respond may make a real difference. Receive guidance from the person rather than assuming you know what is needed. You also have gifts to offer and help to receive. Honoring both can free a group from comparison and allow a fuller expression of the life God has given its members.

Read the Scripture

Open each passage and read slowly. Notice how the word takes shape within God’s story.

Romans 12:3-8 · WEBU

3For I say through the grace that was given me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think; but to think reasonably, as God has apportioned to each person a measure of faith.

4For even as we have many members in one body, and all the members don’t have the same function,

5so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another,

6having gifts differing according to the grace that was given to us: if prophecy, let’s prophesy according to the proportion of our faith;

7or service, let’s give ourselves to service; or he who teaches, to his teaching;

8or he who exhorts, to his exhorting; he who gives, let him do it with generosity; he who rules, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

1 Corinthians 12:14-26 · WEBU

14For the body is not one member, but many.

15If the foot would say, “Because I’m not the hand, I’m not part of the body,” it is not therefore not part of the body.

16If the ear would say, “Because I’m not the eye, I’m not part of the body,” it’s not therefore not part of the body.

17If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the smelling be?

18But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired.

19If they were all one member, where would the body be?

20But now they are many members, but one body.

21The eye can’t tell the hand, “I have no need for you,” or again the head to the feet, “I have no need for you.”

22No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary.

23Those parts of the body which we think to be less honorable, on those we bestow more abundant honor; and our unpresentable parts have more abundant modesty,

24while our presentable parts have no such need. But God composed the body together, giving more abundant honor to the inferior part,

25that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.

26When one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. When one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

Pause and respond

For reflection

Where have I mistaken a different need or way of contributing for lesser worth?

A practice for today

Ask one person what would help them take part more fully in a shared task or conversation. Make one fitting adjustment with their input, without ranking their need against your own.

A prayer

Wise Creator, help me see the person before the comparison. Holy Spirit, free me from pride, envy, and shame, and teach me to honor both gifts and needs. Jesus, form our life together through your love. Give me humility to receive help and patience to offer the support another person actually finds useful. Amen.
