Lead: Helping Others Move Forward
Today’s devotional
A group becomes stuck, and everyone begins watching everyone else. Someone takes over. Someone else grows quiet. The task may be simple, yet the atmosphere becomes tense. Leadership begins to matter in moments like these. Whatever our title, our words and actions can either make shared work harder or help people find a faithful way forward.
Moses learned that caring for a community did not require every decision to pass through him. When Jethro saw people waiting all day for Moses to hear their concerns, he recognized a pattern that was exhausting both leader and people. He urged Moses to teach, appoint trustworthy helpers, and share responsibility. Moses listened. Receiving counsel helped him serve the calling God had given him.
Jesus addressed a deeper struggle when his disciples competed for places of honor. He directed their attention toward service and the purpose of his own coming. His authority brought freedom and life through self-giving love. The cross reveals the cost of that service; the resurrection reveals the living Lord we follow. Christian leadership begins by receiving his grace and learning his way.
Following Jesus gives influence a different purpose. We can clarify a task, invite a quieter voice, offer protection, or entrust meaningful work to someone else. Serving may also require a difficult decision or a clear boundary. Love takes responsibility for the good of people without making them dependent on our constant presence or approval.
The Holy Spirit can help us notice what pressure brings out in us. Do we tighten our grip, avoid the decision, or listen for wisdom? Our worth does not depend on appearing indispensable. Christ has already received us. We are free to share credit, acknowledge a mistake, and equip someone whose gifts differ from our own. Leadership becomes a gift when others gain direction, confidence, and room to contribute.

Read the Scripture
Open each passage and read slowly. Notice how the word takes shape within God’s story.
Mark 10:42-45 · WEBU
42Jesus summoned them and said to them, “You know that they who are recognized as rulers over the nations lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.
43But it shall not be so among you, but whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant.
44Whoever of you wants to become first among you shall be bondservant of all.
45For the Son of Man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Exodus 18:17-23 · WEBU
17Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good.
18You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone.
19Listen now to my voice. I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You represent the people before God, and bring the causes to God.
20You shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.
21Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men which fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
22Let them judge the people at all times. It shall be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves. So shall it be easier for you, and they shall share the load with you.
23If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all these people also will go to their place in peace.”

For reflection
Where could my influence create more room for another person to contribute?
A practice for today
In one shared task today, clarify the purpose and invite a person whose perspective has not yet been heard. Listen before deciding what happens next.
A prayer
Lord Jesus, you used your authority to serve and gave yourself for our life. Free me from needing to be indispensable. Through your Spirit, teach me to listen, decide wisely, and share responsibility. May the influence I carry offer direction, protection, and room for others to use their gifts. Amen.
