Brave: The Next Faithful Step
Today’s devotional
A conversation you have postponed can occupy an entire day. You rehearse what might go wrong, notice your shoulders tightening, and wonder whether silence would be easier. Fear has something to tell you. It may signal real danger, a memory of being hurt, or uncertainty about how another person will respond.
Joshua faced a responsibility far larger than an uncomfortable conversation. Moses had died, and God was calling him to lead Israel into the land promised to them. The command to be courageous came with God's presence and instruction. Joshua needed to listen, prepare, and lead faithfully within that particular calling.
His story invites us to examine where our courage rests. Boldness alone cannot tell us whether a choice is faithful. We need truth, wise counsel, and attention to those affected by our decisions. Sometimes a courageous response is an honest apology. Sometimes it is seeking protection, setting a boundary, or asking someone trustworthy to help.
Jesus brings courage close to the heart. In Gethsemane he expressed sorrow, prayed honestly, and asked his friends to remain nearby. His obedient love did not require him to hide his distress. He continued toward the cross, and his resurrection declares that the self-giving love of God endured beyond the power of death.
The risen Christ meets us through the Holy Spirit in the places where we feel afraid. We can pause, notice our bodies, and bring the fear into prayer. We can ask what is true and safe, receive help, and take one step that serves love. You do not have to settle the entire future today. Begin with the responsibility actually before you, held within God's faithful presence. That small act of courage may become protection or encouragement for someone else.

Joshua 1:6-9 · WEBU
6“Be strong and courageous; for you shall cause this people to inherit the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.
7Only be strong and very courageous. Be careful to observe to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded you. Don’t turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.
8This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.
9Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
Mark 14:32-36 · WEBU
32They came to a place which was named Gethsemane. He said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
33He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be greatly troubled and distressed.
34He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.”
35He went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him.
36He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Please remove this cup from me. However, not what I desire, but what you desire.”
Pause and respond
For reflection
Where is fear shaping a decision, and what would a wise, loving next step look like?
A practice for today
Before one difficult conversation or decision today, pause and name your fear in prayer. Identify one safe, faithful step, and seek a trusted person's help if you need it.
A prayer
Faithful Father, you know what frightens me. Meet me in this moment and help me see what is true. Holy Spirit, give me wisdom to receive help and courage to act with care. Jesus, shape my next step through your self-giving love, so another person may receive protection, honesty, or hope. Amen.
