Kingdom: A Wider View of the Day
Today’s devotional
It is possible to spend a day efficiently and still view almost everything through the question of personal advantage. Will this help my plans? Will it interrupt my work? Will anyone notice what I have contributed? A wider purpose begins to appear when we ask whose life our choices are affecting.
In Acts 1, the disciples ask the risen Jesus about the restoration of the kingdom. He redirects their attention from controlling the timetable toward receiving the Holy Spirit and bearing witness. The horizon reaches from familiar places to the ends of the earth. Their calling belongs within a work larger than their current understanding.
God's kingdom therefore challenges our habit of making personal success the center of every story. The reign of God revealed in Jesus includes truth, mercy, reconciliation, and care for people easily overlooked. We participate through witness and faithful action, while recognizing that we do not own the kingdom or determine its completion.
This larger purpose does not require neglecting the particular life entrusted to us. Family, paid work, rest, and friendship can all become places where love takes practical form. The question is whether we allow those responsibilities to open us toward others or use them to excuse every form of indifference. The Spirit can enlarge concern while also helping us recognize our actual limits.
Look at one decision on today's calendar. Consider who benefits, who carries the cost, and whose voice has not been included. Ask how a response shaped by Jesus would differ from one shaped only by convenience. A wider view may begin with a small adjustment, but it reminds us that our lives belong within God's generous purpose for the world.

Acts 1:6-8 · WEBU
6Therefore, when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, are you now restoring the kingdom to Israel?”
7He said to them, “It isn’t for you to know times or seasons which the Father has set within his own authority.
8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.”
Pause and respond
For reflection
Whose needs or perspective would become visible if I looked beyond my own desired outcome?
A practice for today
Choose one decision that affects another person. Consider their experience before you act, and make one practical adjustment that reflects care rather than convenience alone. Pray for wisdom about your part in God’s wider work.
A prayer
Risen Jesus, widen my concern beyond my own plans. Through your Spirit, help me recognize the people affected by ordinary decisions. Give me courage to witness truthfully and care practically, without pretending that everything depends on me. Let my small part reflect the generosity of your kingdom. Amen.
