Commission: Going with Christ’s Presence
Today’s devotional
We may imagine that meaningful Christian witness begins only after we feel completely prepared. We wait for enough knowledge, confidence, or an ideal opportunity. Meanwhile, ordinary relationships continue to offer occasions for honest conversation, patient care, and the sharing of hope.
Matthew ends with the risen Jesus meeting his disciples and commissioning them. The passage includes worship and uncertainty, yet Jesus speaks from his authority and promises his continuing presence. Making disciples involves baptism and teaching people to observe his commands. It is a life of following learned within relationship and community.
This calling reaches beyond simply conveying information. The way we treat people should be consistent with the Jesus we name. We listen before assuming we know another person's story. We speak about faith without manipulating vulnerability. We welcome questions and allow the other person to exercise freedom. Witness becomes more credible when words and conduct belong to the same life.
The commission also reminds us that Christian formation is shared. No single conversation must accomplish everything. Churches, families, friends, teachers, and mentors participate over time, and we also remain learners. We can offer what we have received while acknowledging what we do not understand. Christ's presence supports the work without promising that every response will be the one we hope for.
Consider a relationship where you can be both attentive and truthful today. A fitting step may be an invitation, an honest answer, a practical kindness, or the willingness to accompany someone through a question. Ask how your words can serve the person's real good. The commission becomes daily practice when following Jesus shapes both what we share and how we share it.

Matthew 28:16-20 · WEBU
16But the eleven disciples went into Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had sent them.
17When they saw him, they bowed down to him; but some doubted.
18Jesus came to them and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.
19Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Pause and respond
For reflection
How could I share the hope of Christ in a way that respects the person, their questions, and their freedom?
A practice for today
Look for one appropriate opportunity to offer encouragement, practical care, or an honest conversation about faith. Listen carefully and let the other person choose how much to share or whether to continue.
A prayer
Jesus, you send your people with the promise of your presence. Help me share what I have received with humility, courage, and respect. Keep my actions consistent with my words. Make room for honest questions, patient companionship, and the freedom through which another person can respond to your invitation. Amen.
