Presence: More Than Moving Forward

Today’s devotional

A project can advance while the people within it grow distant. Tasks are completed, decisions are recorded, and the schedule looks successful. Yet something essential may be missing from the way the work is being carried: attention, honesty, or room for relationship.

In Exodus 33, Moses speaks with God after the crisis of the golden calf. The question of continuing the journey cannot be separated from the question of God's presence. Moses does not want an impressive destination emptied of the relationship that gives the journey meaning. He asks that God remain with the people.

This prayer invites us to examine how we define progress. The next achievement may be worthwhile, but the manner in which we pursue it also forms us. Are we becoming more truthful and attentive, or more willing to overlook people for the sake of momentum? Our activities acquire a different character when we remember that they take place before God.

Christian faith receives God's nearness through Jesus and the gift of the Spirit. We do not sustain that nearness by concentrating perfectly. Our attention will wander, and some seasons will feel spiritually dry. We can nevertheless return through a brief prayer, the words of Scripture, or the patient presence of the church. Relationship has room for repeated beginnings.

Choose one task that usually absorbs all your attention. Before you begin, remember the people affected and offer the work to God. Allow that awareness to shape the pace, the conversation, or the decision. Presence becomes practical when it changes how we attend to the life already around us. Progress can then be received within a more faithful way of traveling.

Exodus 33:12-17 · WEBU

12Moses said to the LORD, “Behold, you tell me, ‘Bring up this people;’ and you haven’t let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’

13Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me your way, now, that I may know you, so that I may find favor in your sight; and consider that this nation is your people.”

14He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

15Moses said to him, “If your presence doesn’t go with me, don’t carry us up from here.

16For how would people know that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Isn’t it that you go with us, so that we are separated, I and your people, from all the people who are on the surface of the earth?”

17The LORD said to Moses, “I will do this thing also that you have spoken; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.”

Pause and respond

For reflection

What would change in one responsibility if I attended to God and the people involved as carefully as I attend to the outcome?

A practice for today

Before a meeting, task, or conversation, offer a brief prayer for the people it affects. Choose one way to make room for their perspective, even if doing so slows the process slightly.

A prayer

God who accompanies your people, remain at the center of the work before me. Help me notice when momentum is drawing me away from care. Receive my wandering attention and teach me to return. Let the way I pursue good things reflect the truth, patience, and love of your presence. Amen.
