Glory: Nearness with Reverence
Today’s devotional
Familiar words can lose their weight. We speak of God so often that we begin to assume our language contains everything there is to know. Reverence returns a sense of proportion: we are approaching the One who knows us completely while exceeding our ability to comprehend.
Moses asks to see God's glory in Exodus 33. God's response speaks of goodness, mercy, and the limits of what Moses can bear. The encounter includes both nearness and mystery. Moses is not given possession of God or a complete account that removes the need for trust.
That combination can deepen our prayer. We may speak honestly and intimately while remaining humble about what we understand. God is not an extension of our preferences or a religious guarantee for our plans. Reverence invites us to receive correction, honor the freedom of God, and resist making divine authority a cover for our own certainty.
The Christian witness brings glory into focus through Jesus. His life reveals God's character in mercy, holiness, truth, and self-giving love. Our attention to glory should therefore make us more careful with people, especially those we are tempted to dismiss. Awe that never becomes humility or compassion has not yet shaped the whole of our response.
Allow one familiar word about God to become a subject of patient attention today. Goodness, mercy, holiness, or faithfulness may be enough. Consider where that word challenges the way you live and where it offers hope. You do not need to resolve every mystery. Let the wonder of God's greatness make room for a more teachable heart and a gentler use of your own power.

Exodus 33:18-23 · WEBU
18Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”
19He said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the LORD’s name before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.”
20He said, “You cannot see my face, for man may not see me and live.”
21The LORD also said, “Behold, there is a place by me, and you shall stand on the rock.
22It will happen, while my glory passes by, that I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by;
23then I will take away my hand, and you will see my back; but my face shall not be seen.”

How could a deeper sense of God’s goodness and greatness change the way I use influence or speak with certainty?
A practice for today
Choose one word describing God in today’s passage. Carry it into an ordinary decision and ask what response would honor it. Let reverence become a specific act of humility or care.
A prayer
Holy and merciful God, deepen my sense of who you are. Keep familiarity from becoming carelessness and confidence from becoming possession. Teach me to receive your nearness with wonder. Let the glory revealed in Jesus shape my words, my judgments, and the way I use whatever influence has been entrusted to me. Amen.
