Dignity Before Achievement
Today’s devotional
We often introduce ourselves by what we do. Our work, responsibilities, and accomplishments help others know something about us. Over time, they can also become the measures we use to decide whether our lives matter. What happens when the work ends, the achievement feels small, or a familiar ability is lost?
Genesis begins the human story with God's action. God creates human beings in his image and entrusts them with responsibility within creation. Their dignity is already present before the account describes anything they have accomplished. They receive a life that matters and a calling within it.
This is where becoming fully human begins. A child does not have to finish developing to deserve love. A person with profound disability does not need a hidden talent to justify belonging. An older person remains worthy of care when memory or strength changes. Each is a person before God.
Given dignity also makes our growth important. Our actions affect people whose lives matter. Learning to tell the truth, receive correction, or care patiently for a neighbor can help us live more faithfully within the calling we have received. These practices express a response to God's gift; they do not establish our right to exist.
The life and saving work of Jesus give Christian growth its direction. We are invited to become truthful and loving in communion with him. The invitation begins with grace, meeting us in the human life we already have.
Today, notice someone you are tempted to evaluate mainly by usefulness, achievement, or ease of care. That person may be you. Give attention to the life before you. Ask what care is needed, and let that person's dignity guide your response.

Read the Scripture
Open each passage and read slowly. Notice a word, question, or invitation that asks for your attention.
Genesis 1:26-28 · WEBU
26God said, “Let’s make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them.
28God blessed them. God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

For reflection
Where have I allowed achievement or independence to determine how much care I believe a person deserves?
A practice for today
Give someone your unhurried attention today. Listen without asking what they have achieved, and let their presence matter before their usefulness.
A prayer
Creator God, help me receive the dignity you give. Teach me to honor each person before measuring what that person can do. Shape my response through the grace and love of Jesus. Amen.
