Receiving the Life We Are Given

Today’s devotional

Before we could choose, speak, or offer anything in return, we received life. That remains true when we grow capable enough to overlook our dependence. Every adult began by receiving care, and every adult continues to need what cannot be supplied alone.

Genesis describes the human formed from the earth and receiving the breath of life from God. The same account places that person in a garden to tend and keep. Gift and responsibility belong together. Dependence on God gives us a life within which our actions matter.

Psalm 139 brings this truth into prayer. The psalmist speaks of being known by God in the hidden beginning of life. God's care precedes public visibility and usefulness. We do not become worthy of his attention by making ourselves impressive.

Receiving life also means receiving limits. We need sleep, food, help, and time. We can be present with particular people, but we cannot be available everywhere. These limits belong to being created. They give shape to the actual life in which we can love and serve.

Calling life a gift does not make every experience good. Neglect, violence, and disease cause real harm. Honoring dependence includes protecting people from exploitation and responding to suffering with care. We can receive our created life gratefully while resisting what injures it.

Prayer and rest help us practice this distinction. We bring needs before God while taking responsibility for what we can do. We pause from work without asking our usefulness to secure our worth. Receiving help can make faithful action possible.

Today, identify one responsibility that is yours to carry and one need you can honestly acknowledge. Attend to the responsibility. Let someone help with the need. Both actions can become expressions of trust in the God who gives and sustains life.

Psalm 139:13-16 · WEBU

13For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb.

14I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

15My frame wasn’t hidden from you, when I was made in secret, woven together in the depths of the earth.

16Your eyes saw my body. In your book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there were none of them.

Pause and respond

For reflection

What would change today if I received help without treating my need as a failure?

A practice for today

Name one responsibility that is yours and one need you cannot meet alone. Take a concrete step with the responsibility, and ask for help with the need.

A prayer

Giver of life, thank you for the care that has sustained me. Help me accept my limits, act responsibly, and receive what I cannot provide alone. Teach me to trust you. Amen.

What will you carry with you?
