Loved Before the Result
Today’s devotional
An uncertain decision can awaken a deeper fear: what will this outcome say about me? We may wonder whether people will still trust us if the plan changes or whether our contribution matters when another person knows more. Responsibility has become tangled with the question of whether we are worthy of love.
Paul locates God's love in Christ's action toward people who could not establish their own worthiness. Christ comes toward the weak and sinful. The love from which Christian hope grows begins in God's gracious initiative. A successful season of leadership does not make that love more real, and a difficult season does not place us beyond its reach.
Receiving this truth makes honest responsibility possible. A question about a plan can remain a question about the plan. A mistake can be acknowledged without becoming the whole account of a person. Harm still requires repair, and apologies still need changed conduct. Grace gives us a place from which to undertake those responsibilities without defending our importance at every turn. We can also receive encouragement, friendship, and rest as gifts rather than rewards that must wait until the work is finished.
Allow one unfinished part of your life into prayer today. Name it plainly, before arranging it into a more impressive story. Remember that Christ's love has already moved toward you. Then notice whether receiving that love frees you to attend more generously to someone else: celebrating their contribution, hearing their concern, or allowing them to care for you. The person who leads remains a person who needs love. God welcomes that person throughout the uncertain work, including the parts that nobody else can see.

Romans 5:5-8 · WEBU
5and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
6For while we were yet weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
7For one will hardly die for a righteous man. Yet perhaps for a good person someone would even dare to die.
8But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

A practice for today
Name one unfinished responsibility before God without defending yourself. Receive a concrete kindness today, or ask for needed help, and allow it to be care for you as a person rather than a reward for performance.
A prayer
Loving Father, thank you for meeting me before I can make myself impressive. Help me receive the love revealed in Christ and bring my unfinished life into your care. Give me courage to repair what is mine, freedom to receive help, and generosity toward others whose worth also exceeds their results. Amen.
