Let Love Govern the Decision

Today’s devotional

People experience a vision through the arrangements it creates. They live with schedules, expectations, decisions, and the way concerns are handled when something goes wrong. A beautiful purpose becomes recognizable through these practices. The question of love belongs inside their design, before the results are ready to celebrate.

Paul places love beside gifts that could easily win admiration: striking speech, remarkable knowledge, powerful faith, and extraordinary sacrifice. Without love, those gifts fail to become what they should. He then gives love a practical character through patience, kindness, humility, and truth. These qualities test the way authority is exercised and the experience of the people who live within its reach.

Ask whose good a decision serves and who will carry its cost. A new arrangement may create an opportunity while disrupting a family's transport, increasing a volunteer's workload, or leaving a quiet participant unheard. Attending to those effects makes the vision more human. It also permits accountability. Love can name harm, set a boundary, or end an unsuitable arrangement while continuing to honor the dignity of everyone involved. It has enough concern for truth to refuse a superficial peace.

Bring one decision back to the people affected. Invite a concrete account of what it asks of them, and consider what support or revision would express care. You may still need to make a difficult judgment. Let that judgment be one you can explain without dismissing another person's experience. Christ shows us authority given in service. As his love shapes our choices, the people within our plans become visible again as neighbors whose good is part of the purpose itself.

Read the Scripture

Open each passage and read slowly. Notice what these words reveal about God and the life before you.

1 Corinthians 13:1-7 · WEBU

1If I speak with the languages of men and of angels, but don’t have love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

2If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but don’t have love, I am nothing.

3If I give away all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but don’t have love, it profits me nothing.

4Love is patient and is kind. Love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud,

5doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil;

6doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;

7bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.

Pause and respond

For reflection

What would change if the people affected by this decision helped me understand its cost?

A practice for today

Ask one affected person what a current expectation requires of them. Identify a support, clarification, or revision you can offer, and follow through rather than treating the conversation as sufficient by itself.

A prayer

Jesus, let your love govern the way I use responsibility. Help me see the people within our plans, hear the costs they carry, and act truthfully about harm. Give me patient courage to make decisions that serve their good, and humility to revise what our shared experience reveals. Amen.
