Empowering Student Voice
Today’s devotional
A choice becomes meaningful when the answer can influence what happens. Students recognize when their opinion is requested only after the important decisions have already been made. Inviting voice asks us to identify an area where their knowledge, questions, or preferences can genuinely shape the learning.
First Peter describes gifts received through grace and used in service to others. Each person has a place within a community of care. Educators can reflect on this shared responsibility by asking how students are learning to contribute, rather than merely comply with decisions made for them.
Appropriate choice still needs a clear purpose and boundaries. Learners might select a question to investigate, an example to examine, or a suitable form for presenting understanding. Explain what is fixed, what is open, and why. Such clarity allows responsibility to grow within the learning task rather than leaving students to guess what the teacher will accept.
Student voice also includes feedback about the experience of learning. A quiet response form or individual conversation may reveal more than a whole-class discussion. Listen especially for people whose views are easily missed. You may need to keep a decision, but you can explain your reasoning and show that the contribution was considered.
Ask where you can share a modest decision today. Invite students to make a choice, explain it, and reflect on its effect. Christ’s regard for persons can shape a classroom in which agency is practiced with care. Learners gradually discover that their voices carry responsibility and that their contributions can serve more than their own preferences.

Read the Scripture
Open each passage and read slowly. Notice what these words reveal about God and the life before you.
1 Peter 4:8-11 · WEBU
8And above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins.
9Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.
10As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.
11If anyone speaks, let it be as it were the very words of God. If anyone serves, let it be as of the strength which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

For reflection
Where could students make a real decision that serves both their learning and the shared task?
A practice for today
Offer two or three appropriate options within one assignment. Explain the learning purpose, ask students to give a reason for their choice, and review what they learned from that decision.
A prayer
God of grace, help me make room for learners to contribute with responsibility. Give me wisdom about the choices I can share and patience to hear unfamiliar ideas. Teach us to use our voices thoughtfully, receive others’ perspectives, and offer our gifts for the common good. Amen.
