Celebrating Growth and Success

Today’s devotional

A student revises a sentence that once seemed impossible to write. Another asks for help earlier than before. A third begins a task with less hesitation. These changes may not appear dramatic from outside, yet they can reveal learning that deserves careful recognition and gratitude.

James writes about perseverance within trials and the maturity that can grow as faith endures. His words give hope to people facing difficulty. They do not ask us to create unnecessary hardship or celebrate another person’s pain. When learners struggle, our responsibility includes offering support and examining whether a barrier can be removed.

Growth becomes clearer when we name what changed and what helped. Perhaps the student used a new strategy, received a useful explanation, practiced over time, or found the courage to ask a question. Recognizing those conditions helps them understand progress without making effort alone responsible for every outcome.

Romans invites believers to rejoice with those who rejoice. Shared celebration can be generous when it leaves room for different kinds of progress. We can honor an achievement without making another learner feel that they have disappeared beside it. Ask how the student prefers to be recognized and keep the acknowledgment proportionate and truthful.

Look for one piece of growth today that might otherwise go unnoticed. Invite the learner to describe it in their own words. Give thanks for the people and supports involved, and help identify a next step that remains manageable. Christ’s care allows us to celebrate what is developing while continuing to receive the person who is still learning.

James 1:2-5 · WEBU

2Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations,

3knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

4Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

5But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Pause and respond

For reflection

What specific growth can I celebrate, and what support helped make it possible?

A practice for today

Invite a student to compare an earlier attempt with current work. Name one change together, recognize the strategy or support involved, and choose an appropriate way to acknowledge the progress.

A prayer

Generous God, help me notice growth with gratitude. Keep celebration truthful and attentive to the learner’s experience. Teach me to recognize the support behind progress and to respond compassionately when growth is difficult, so that every student remains valued within an unfinished journey. Amen.
