Grow: Tending What God Is Forming
Today’s devotional
A gardener can water faithfully and still spend days looking at unchanged soil. Much of what sustains a plant begins out of sight. Our impatience with people can be stronger than our impatience with a garden. We want visible evidence that effort is working, and we may begin treating a slower season as a failure.
Paul used the image of planting and watering to address rivalry in Corinth. Believers were organizing their loyalties around different leaders. Paul named the work he and Apollos had done, then located the source of growth in God. Their service mattered, but neither leader could claim to have created the life taking shape among the people.
This gives us both a responsibility and a release. We can offer encouragement, truthful feedback, patient practice, and conditions that support learning. We cannot force another person’s transformation or use a preferred timetable to measure their worth. Even in our own lives, growth involves receiving what God gives through relationships and faithful care.
Jesus described fruitful life as remaining in him, like branches receiving life from a vine. His invitation draws us into a relationship that sustains our response. Through his death and resurrection, he gives life we cannot manufacture. The Holy Spirit forms his love within us as we attend to Scripture, pray, practice, receive correction, and begin again.
Look for a small sign of that work. Perhaps you asked for help sooner, admitted a mistake, or paused before answering harshly. Give thanks without demanding that one change solve everything. Patient care can include rest and appropriate support when a need is serious. Different people and seasons call for different care. Today, choose one faithful way to tend what is growing. Let patience become part of your offering to others as well. God’s love meets us while the work remains unfinished.
Adapted from Week 27, “Grow: Practicing patient care while God gives the increase,” in Wonder Words by Dr. R. C. Titus.
Read the Scripture
Open each passage and read slowly. Notice how the word takes shape within God’s story.
1 Corinthians 3:5-9 · WEBU
5Who then is Apollos, and who is Paul, but servants through whom you believed, and each as the Lord gave to him?
6I planted. Apollos watered. But God gave the increase.
7So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.
8Now he who plants and he who waters are the same, but each will receive his own reward according to his own labor.
9For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s farming, God’s building.
John 15:4-5 · WEBU
4Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.
5I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
Pause and respond
For reflection
Where am I pressing for visible progress instead of offering the patient care this season needs?
A practice for today
Notice one small sign of growth in yourself or someone you support. Name it with gratitude, then choose one fitting practice or form of support to continue without demanding an immediate result.
A prayer
God of life, thank you for working beyond what I can measure. Keep me close to Christ when change seems slow. Holy Spirit, help me tend growth with practice, rest, encouragement, and fitting support. Free me from comparison, and make my patience a gift to someone whose life you are still forming. Amen.
