Belong: A Place to Receive and Offer

Today’s devotional

A person can be present every week and still remain at the edge of a community. They know where to sit, yet are unsure whether their questions, abilities, or needs have a place. Belonging asks more of us than leaving a door open. It grows through being known, protected, trusted, and invited into a life shared with others.

Paul’s picture of the church as a body challenges the rankings that keep people on the margins. Different members cannot replace one another, and visible strength does not determine whose presence matters. Those who appear weaker deserve particular care. The suffering or honor of one member concerns the whole community. God’s arrangement calls people into mutual need and responsibility.

Jesus made a place for Zacchaeus when the crowd saw someone to reject. He called him by name and went to his home. That welcome did not hide the harm connected with Zacchaeus’s life. It opened a response that included generosity and restitution. Grace brought him near and gave repair a place to begin.

Our own belonging in Christ is received before we prove what we can contribute. His death and resurrection bring people into a new shared life. Through the Spirit, we learn both to offer our gifts and to need the gifts of others. No one has to become impressive or effortless to deserve care.

Communities practice this welcome through concrete choices. We can explain an unfamiliar routine, provide a quieter way to participate, make a space accessible, or invite someone into a meaningful responsibility. Asking what helps honors their agency; allowing them to decline honors their boundaries. Safety and truthful accountability also belong within a healthy community. Today, notice someone who is present but seldom heard. Seek one way to make participation possible, remembering that Christ remains the center and that another person is a fellow member, never our project.

1 Corinthians 12:18-26 · WEBU

18But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired.

19If they were all one member, where would the body be?

20But now they are many members, but one body.

21The eye can’t tell the hand, “I have no need for you,” or again the head to the feet, “I have no need for you.”

22No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary.

23Those parts of the body which we think to be less honorable, on those we bestow more abundant honor; and our unpresentable parts have more abundant modesty,

24while our presentable parts have no such need. But God composed the body together, giving more abundant honor to the inferior part,

25that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.

26When one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. When one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

Luke 19:5-10 · WEBU

5When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.”

6He hurried, came down, and received him joyfully.

7When they saw it, they all murmured, saying, “He has gone in to lodge with a man who is a sinner.”

8Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, half of my goods I give to the poor. If I have wrongfully exacted anything of anyone, I restore four times as much.”

9Jesus said to him, “Today, salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham.

10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Pause and respond

For reflection

Who may be present in a community I share without yet having a meaningful way to participate?

A practice for today

Ask one person what would make participation easier or more meaningful for them. Listen to their answer and make one practical adjustment you can responsibly offer, leaving them free to decline.

A prayer

Welcoming Father, thank you for receiving me in Christ before I prove my usefulness. Holy Spirit, help me notice those who remain at the edge. Teach us to protect one another, receive different gifts, and make meaningful participation possible. Let the life we share become a place of truthful care and grace. Amen.
