Work That Can Be Shared

Today’s devotional

Good work deserves attention. A lesson, a repair, a carefully kept promise, or an act of service can benefit someone in a real way. Trouble begins when the value of the work becomes a reason that no demand may be questioned and one person's availability must have no limit.

In Exodus 18, Jethro observes Moses hearing disputes from morning until evening. His concern includes Moses and the people waiting. The task matters, yet the arrangement is too heavy for one person. Sharing responsibility becomes a way to care for both the work and the community it serves.

A faithful calling is wider than a particular role and more specific than meeting every need we can see. We can ask what is actually ours to do, what level of attention the task requires, and who else should be involved. Delegation also requires relevant information and authority. Sending a task without the means to perform it simply transfers the burden.

Second Corinthians 8 describes generosity in relation to what people have, with concern for a fair sharing of need and abundance. This helps us examine sacrifice without making depletion a virtue. Costly love may be freely offered, while an unfair arrangement may need correction. We ask who chooses, who benefits, and who repeatedly bears the cost.

Review one responsibility that has become difficult to sustain. Is the purpose still clear? Could the work be simplified, shared, or handed on? A changed role may also require grief and time rather than immediate replacement. Offer the care that is yours with seriousness, and receive the limits that keep your service truthful. The person doing the work remains part of the life that deserves care.

Exodus 18:17-23 · WEBU

17Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good.

18You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone.

19Listen now to my voice. I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You represent the people before God, and bring the causes to God.

20You shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.

21Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men which fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

22Let them judge the people at all times. It shall be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves. So shall it be easier for you, and they shall share the load with you.

23If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all these people also will go to their place in peace.”

2 Corinthians 8:12-15 · WEBU

12For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what you have, not according to what you don’t have.

13For this is not that others may be eased and you distressed,

14but for equality. Your abundance at this present time supplies their lack, that their abundance also may become a supply for your lack, that there may be equality.

15As it is written, “He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack.”

Pause and respond

For reflection

What good responsibility needs a different arrangement rather than simply more effort from the same person?

A practice for today

Choose one demanding responsibility and clarify its actual purpose. Identify a task that can be shared, simplified, or handed on, including the information and authority another person would need to carry it well.

A prayer

God of faithful work, help me honor the responsibilities entrusted to me without making exhaustion their measure. Give me discernment about a fitting standard, courage to revise an unfair arrangement, and humility to share the work. Care for those who serve and those who depend on their service, through the grace of Christ. Amen.
