A Welcome That Changes the Arrangement

Today’s devotional

A welcome can be sincere while the room remains difficult to enter. A person is invited, yet the schedule, cost, pace, or expectations make participation nearly impossible. Kind words matter, and the arrangements of shared life reveal how far those words have been allowed to reach.

First Corinthians 12 describes a body whose members need one another. Paul challenges the claim that some can be dismissed as unnecessary and calls for shared care in suffering and honor. Belonging cannot depend entirely on visible usefulness, regular attendance, or the ability to contribute in the most familiar way.

Acts 6 gives this concern an organizational form. A complaint reveals that some widows are being neglected in daily service. The community responds by establishing responsibility for the need. The report of failure is allowed to change the arrangement. Growth and sincere spiritual purpose do not make practical attention unnecessary.

Our communities can learn to hear a concern without treating it as an attack on every good thing they have done. A person may need access, clear information, continuing companionship, or a safe way to report harm. The response should include their perspective and protect them from retaliation. Those coordinating care also need support, resources, and permission to share the work.

Ask who becomes less visible when a crisis continues or capacity changes. What would help that person remain known beyond occasional announcements about their need? A practical adjustment, a dependable conversation, or an accessible gathering may give welcome a more substantial form. Shared life becomes a witness to God's love when people can influence the conditions under which they are invited to belong.

1 Corinthians 12:21-26 · WEBU

21The eye can’t tell the hand, “I have no need for you,” or again the head to the feet, “I have no need for you.”

22No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary.

23Those parts of the body which we think to be less honorable, on those we bestow more abundant honor; and our unpresentable parts have more abundant modesty,

24while our presentable parts have no such need. But God composed the body together, giving more abundant honor to the inferior part,

25that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.

26When one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. When one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

Acts 6:1-4 · WEBU

1Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, a complaint arose from the Hellenists against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily service.

2The twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not appropriate for us to forsake the word of God and serve tables.

3Therefore, select from among you, brothers, seven men of good report, full of the Holy Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

4But we will continue steadfastly in prayer and in the ministry of the word.”

Pause and respond

For reflection

Whose belonging currently depends on overcoming an arrangement our community could reasonably change?

A practice for today

Identify one barrier to participation in a group you belong to. Ask an affected person what would help, then raise a specific change with those responsible or make an adjustment within your own role.

A prayer

God who forms one body from many members, help us notice people our arrangements overlook. Make us willing to hear complaints, correct neglect, and protect those who speak about harm. Give us practical wisdom for access and continuing care. Let our welcome become a shared life in which people remain known and valued. Amen.
