Hope When the Condition Remains

Today’s devotional

What remains of hope when the condition remains? You may have sought help, accepted care, made changes, and prayed. Some things have improved while others are unchanged. Honest description can become difficult when the people around you seem to need a story of visible recovery.

Romans 8 gives hope a setting in a creation that still groans. Believers await the redemption of their bodies, and the Spirit helps in weakness, including when prayer exceeds the words available. The presence of God does not remove every experience of waiting. Groaning belongs within the life being held toward God's future.

Christian hope rests in the death and resurrection of Jesus, not in a requirement that our health demonstrate our faith. We may continue asking for relief, more time, or restored ability. We may also ask for help living well with an enduring limit. Neither request must become a test by which observers decide how faithfully we trust.

Revelation 21 turns toward God dwelling with his people and making all things new. Tears are acknowledged in the promise that they will be wiped away. This future is God's gift, larger than anything our habits or care can secure. It gives present care a direction: belonging, dignity, and love matter now because the person is held within God's promise.

Receive the life before you without requiring it to have a satisfying conclusion today. An appointment may still need arranging, a responsibility sharing, or a grief naming. There is also room for beauty, conversation, and rest that do not explain away the pain. Hope can sustain these modest acts while leaving the hardest questions open. The person who continues to need care remains fully worthy of receiving it.

Romans 8:22-27 · WEBU

22For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now.

23Not only so, but ourselves also, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for adoption, the redemption of our body.

24For we were saved in hope, but hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for that which he sees?

25But if we hope for that which we don’t see, we wait for it with patience.

26In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.

27He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to God.

Revelation 21:1-5 · WEBU

1I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth have passed away, and the sea is no more.

2I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband.

3I heard a loud voice out of heaven saying, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with people; and he will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.

4He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more. The first things have passed away.”

5He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” He said, “Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.”

Pause and respond

For reflection

How could I speak more honestly about present difficulty while keeping my hope rooted in Christ rather than a required outcome?

A practice for today

Name one hope and one present need without forcing them into a tidy conclusion. Ask for the practical care the need requires, and receive one ordinary good without making it compensate for the difficulty.

A prayer

Risen Christ, hold my hope when healing remains incomplete and prayer is difficult to form. Receive the good I still desire and the reality I must live today. Help care reach me and others through patient communities. Keep us turned toward your promised renewal, with room for honest tears and ordinary gifts along the way. Amen.
